The faculty members of the Traditional Instruments Department at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing are among the most accomplished and respected musicians of our time. Through our groundbreaking partnership with the Central Conservatory, most Chinese instrument students at Bard receive studio instruction directly from a faculty member from the Central Conservatory, in person and via video conference, with the addition of regular lessons with Central Conservatory graduate assistants live on the Bard campus each semester. The program includes summer travel to Beijing to work with the master instructor in person while residing on campus at the Central Conservatory.

Yu Hongmei, erhu

A graduate of the Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) in Beijing, Yu Hongmei is one of the most brilliant erhu virtuosos as well as the most influential erhu educator in China today. She currently serves as dean of the Chinese Music Department at CCOM, and is the designated guest erhu soloist for the China National Traditional Orchestra.

Zhang Hongyan, pipa
Zhang Hongyan is an outstanding contemporary Chinese pipa performer and educator. She is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Central Conservatory and serves as dean of the Department of Traditional Instruments and the Cultural Heritage Protection and Research Center. She is a guest professor at the Art Institute of Beijing University, honorary academician of Beijing Normal University–Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC), and director of the Central Institute of Vocational and Technical Education in China. She has also been a visiting scholar at Columbia University.
ZHANG QIANG, PIPA
张强,著名琵琶演奏家
A world-famous pipa virtuoso, Professor Zhang Qiang is director of the String Instrument Division of the Chinese Music Department at the Central Conservatory of Music.

ZHOU WANG, GUZHENG
周望,著名古筝演奏家
A respected performer of the Shanxi Zheng genre, Zhou Wang is a professor of guzheng at the Central Conservatory of Music, and director of the conservatory's Chinese Music Department. She also serves as vice president of the China Guzheng Society.

Xu Yang, ruan
Xu Yang, the leader of contemporary ruan scholars in China, is a performer, educator, professor and doctoral supervisor at Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. Ms. Xu is the associate director of the ruan professional committee in the China Nationalities Orchestra Society (CNOS), artistic director of the Ruan Family Orchestra at Central Conservatory of Music, and the director of Xu Yang Ruan Family International Cultural Research Institute.
Zhao Jiazhen, guqin
Zhao Jiazhen is a professor of guqin in the Traditional Music Department at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. She studied at the Central Conservatory, graduating in 1984.
qiao jia, Chinese percussion
When she was eleven years old Qiao Jia passed the audition to be a percussion student at The Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Years later she graduated and became a classical Chinese percussion teacher at the same institution, which she still holds today. She has devoted herself to the performance of contemporary music written for her by Asian and western composers.
CHEN YAN, ERHU
Chen Yan is a young professor of erhu in the Central Conservatory of Music’s Traditional Instruments Department. A performer in the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, she graduated from Shanghai Conservatory of Music with bachelor’s degree, and received her master’s degree at the Central Conservatory of Music.
US-China Music Institute Faculty, bard college conservatory of music
The Bard Conservatory’s extensive local faculty of instrument studio teachers includes several US-based Chinese instrument masters. These teachers supplement the CCOM faculty with additional lessons, one-on-one coaching and master classes on the Bard Campus or in nearby New York City.
Chen Tao, dizI
Chen Tao is an internationally acclaimed Chinese flutist, music educator, composer, and conductor of Chinese orchestra; founder and director of Melody of Dragon, Inc., and of Melody of Dragon & the Youth; artistic director and conductor of the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York and conductor of New Jersey Buddha’s Light Youth Chinese Orchestra; artistic director of New York Guqin Association; and executive chairman of the New York Chinese Music Instruments International Competition since 2015. He is also a 27th-generation musician of Zhi-Hua Buddhism music. He joined the US-China Music Institute faculty in 2019 as master teacher of the dizi.
GUO YAZHI, SUONA AND MASTER CLASSES
Guo Yazhi is regarded by many as the finest suona player in the world, and his expressive performances and unique style have created many opportunities in the world of modern music for the instrument. He is a visiting artist and teaches master classes at Philadelphia University of the Arts and Berklee College of Music, as well as being on the faculty at the Bard Conservatory of Music as a master teacher of suona.
Xinyan li, Chinese music composition and history
Born in Qiqihar, China, Dr. Xinyan Li received her doctoral degree in composition at University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at China Conservatory of Music in composition and music theory. At Bard since 2020, Dr. Li teaches the three-semester sequence Literature and Language of Chinese Music, with courses on Folk, Instrumental, and Operatic Chinese music traditions. She also teaches a composition in Chinese style course in the Bard Conservatory. Li has premiered two newly commissioned works for the US-China Music Institute at performances in Bard’s Fisher Center and New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Wu Man, Master Classes
吴蛮,琵琶大师班
Recognized as the world’s premier pipa virtuoso and leading ambassador of Chinese music, Wu Man has carved out a career as a soloist, educator, and composer, giving her lute-like instrument—which has a history of over 2,000 years in China—a new role in both traditional and contemporary music. Through numerous concert tours Wu Man has premiered hundreds of new works for the pipa, while spearheading multimedia projects to both preserve and create awareness of China’s ancient musical traditions.
吴蛮是国际乐坛上中国音乐的使者与琵琶音乐的代言人,更是跨界音乐与跨文化交流的标志性人物。美国《洛杉矶时报》评论“吴蛮是将琵琶介绍给西方的重要音乐家……”。她五次获得美国格莱美唱片“最佳演奏”和“最佳世界音乐专辑”奖提名,并入围台湾金曲“最佳传统音乐专辑奖”。她以杰出的艺术成就和突出的贡献荣获重要的“美国艺术家”大奖,并被西方媒体与大众公认为“中国音乐的使者”。
Mingmei Yip, Chinese Music culture and history
Mingmei Yip received her PhD in musicology from the University of Paris (Sorbonne). A master performer on the Qin, she is also a writer, and an accomplished as a painter and calligrapher. Dr. Yip joined the US-China Music Institute faculty in 2019 to teach Chinese music courses including Introduction to Chinese Music and The Guqin in Chinese Culture.
