SUMMER LEARNING SERIES

The US-China Music Institute has launched the Summer Learning Series to offer Chinese music classes in English and entirely online in 2021. Taught by accomplished scholars and musicians of Chinese music on the faculty of the Bard Conservatory, the series is open to the general public as well as to students enrolled at Bard.

CHINESE MUSIC STYLES COMPOSITION WORKSHOP

Six Class Sessions
Dates: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, June 28-July 9, 2021
Time: 8:00pm to 10:00pm Eastern Time (US)
Professor: Xinyan Li, Bard College Conservatory of Music

Fee: $200

This two-week workshop is open to musicians of any age and nationality who are interested in composing original works in Chinese music styles. Students will learn composition techniques in various music styles and genres of Han and minorities. They will learn how to compose original works for Chinese instruments, and how to orchestrate for Chinese ensembles and mixed ensembles of Chinese and Western instruments. Professor Xinyan Li is a composer and educator with expansive knowledge and experience in Chinese folk songs and chorus, instrumental music, and traditional operatic music. A winner of several international composition awards, she is an active composer whose works have been extensively performed by world-renowned musicians. She currently teaches Chinese music related courses at the Bard College Conservatory of Music.

INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE MUSIC

This three-week course will present the music of China in its social, philosophical, and cultural context and will be suitable for anyone who is interested in Chinese music and culture. Professor Mingmei Yip is an accomplished author, musician, scholar, and artist. She teaches Chinese music related courses in the Bard College Conservatory of Music as well as speaking and performing regularly in the NYC region and around the world. USCMI Summer Learning Series courses are non-credit bearing and open to Bard students and non-Bard students. Classes are held online on Zoom and the class size is limited to allow students the opportunity to interact with the instructor and one another during the course. Courses may have prerequisites.
