PAINTED SKIN: A GHOST STORY CHAMBER OPERA
A TRADITIONAL STORY REIMAGINED FOR OUR TIME
Hao Weiya’s operatic adaptation of the classic Chinese short story Painted Skin combines a Western compositional approach with stylistic elements of Peking Opera to tell this supernatural horror story in a uniquely modern way. The China Now Music Festival’s premiere production of Hao’s opera transports the setting to a present-day American university, to further explore the cross-cultural approach suggested by Hao’s stylistic choices.
The story revolves around a trio of characters: the scholar Wang (mezzo-soprano Kristin Gornstein), his wife Chen (coloratura soprano Holly Flack), and the unnamed, beguiling demon that comes between them (Kunqu opera singer Qian Yi).
At its core, Painted Skin takes a critical stance on how easily and often men in power submit to their sexual desires in spite of their existing relationships or commitments, and offers a deadly fate for those who act on those base impulses.
PRODUCTION
In lieu of traditional scenic design, this production uses video projection art for textural and environmental effects to visually place the performers within the alternating worlds of Painted Skin: the human world, and the realm of demons. The design references natural and ambient visual effects – rainfall, the glow and smoke of candles, the moon, a heartbeat. Newly commissioned motion graphics from Chinese-American designer Suki Violet Su will add dramatic, modern punches to the audience's experience of this story.
Dramatic, sculptural, and gestural lighting accentuates the projection art as well as the action of the three principal singers.
