A CROSS-CULTURAL CELEBRATION: THE LEGACY OF LEE HSIEN-MING AND ALEXANDER TCHEREPNIN

The celebration begins with a concert featuring Alexander Tcherepnin works inspired by his wife Lee Hsien-Ming, and by his interest in and enthusiasm for Chinese culture. The program will include the three prize-winning scores in the 2024 Tcherepnin International Competition for Composers. Lectures and discussions presented over the second day will deal with the life and work of Ming Tcherepnin and with Alexander Tcherepnin scores heard in the previous evening’s concert.

ABOUT THE PRIZE WINNERS OF THE 2024 TCHEREPNIN COMPETITION FOR COMPOSERS

Suxu Yao, First Prize
Suxu Yao
姚苏栩 was admitted to Shanghai Conservatory of Music Affiliated Middle School in 2018 to study conducting. In 2021 she was admitted as a double-major in both composition and orchestral conducting at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She won the first prize at the 11th international online JSFest 2023 composition competition. She has rehearsed and conducted “YINZHONG’’ prize international composition competition, and has also conducted the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra, the Shanghai Pops Orchestra, and other ensembles.

Leyou Wang, Second Prize
Leyou Wang
王乐游 grew up in Beijing, China. He moved to Stuttgart, Germany in 2009 and studied music theory at HMDK Stuttgart with Professor Bernd Asmus, and orchestral conducting with Professor Per Borin and Professor Rasmus Baumann. He did his master’s degree in music theory at MH Freiburg with Professor Otfried Büsingand and graduated in 2018. In 2020, Wang was accepted into the DMA program of University of Missouri Kansas City. He has been studying with Dr. Chen Yi, Dr. Zhou Long, Dr. Yotam Haber and Dr. Paul Rudy. In 2023 he was chosen as one of the featured artists of the American Composers Orchestra’s EarShot program.

Jianjun He, Third Prize
Jianjun He
何建军, a native of China, received his BA in violin performance from Northwestern National University (Lanzhou, China), MA in music theory from The Arts Academy of China (Beijing, China), and DMA in composition from West Virginia University. His compositions, numbering over ninety for a wide variety of media, are enjoying growing success in Asia and the United States. CD recordings of his music are available on ERM, VMM, Mark Masters, Navona, New Ariel, Innova, and Da Di labels. He has published books and research papers on music theory, compositional techniques, ethnomusicology, and music education. Dr. He is currently Professor of Composition and Theory at Jacksonville University (FL).
