The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is the oldest symphony orchestra in China. Created in 1879 and at the time with only non-Chinese musicians, it was the first professional orchestra in China to perform Beethoven’s symphonies. Shanghai is considered the cradle of Western classical music in China, and the Shanghai Symphony retains a prominent place in China’s classical music scene.
